On February 14, 2026, the Chiang Kai Shek College Southmont Campus held its Chinese New Year Celebration at the Philflex Sports Center, bringing together all Montessori and Primary Years Programme (PYP) students, their families, and invited guests for a meaningful and culturally enriching event. The celebration reflected the school’s strong commitment to honoring Chinese heritage while fostering unity within its diverse learning community.
As an IB Candidate School, the Southmont Campus also welcomed non-CKSCian families, providing them with the opportunity to witness how Chinese culture is intentionally integrated into the academic curriculum in alignment with the mission and values of the International Baccalaureate. The event served as a platform to demonstrate how cultural traditions are embedded in teaching and learning, nurturing international-mindedness among students.
The formal programme commenced with a New Year Parade, setting a festive tone. Mr. Robert Que, Executive Vice Chairman of the CKS College Board of Trustees, formally welcomed the guests, students, teachers, and parents, emphasizing the importance of cultural traditions in education and community building. The event was strongly supported by members of the Board of Trustees, namely Mr. Albert Lee, Vice Chairman; Mrs. Margarita Go, Treasurer; and Ms. Joyce Dy, whose presence underscored the Board’s continued support for school initiatives and cultural celebrations.
A series of carefully curated performances followed, featuring the talents of Montessori and IB PYP students. Dance showcases celebrating a healthy and joyful New Year, 健康过好年, traditional New Year song performances such as 「年俗歌」 和「过年了」, poetry recitations「马年春年诵」, and a Wushu exhibition by the 主校武术队highlighted the students’ cultural understanding, confidence, and stage presence.
One of the most distinguished highlights of the celebration was the Dragon and Lion Grove performance「欢迎马年新春」, which exemplified collaboration across programmes and year levels. The powerful and steady rhythm of traditional Chinese drums was expertly performed by the IB PYP Grade 2 students, providing a strong musical foundation for the presentation. Accompanied by the rhythmic drumming, the PYP Grade 1 and Montessori Kindergarten students animated the dragon and lion groves with coordinated movements that symbolized strength, courage, and prosperity. Enhancing the cultural significance of the performance, Grade 1 students confidently recited Chinese auspicious phrases, extending blessings of good fortune, health, and happiness for the New Year. This segment clearly illustrated how Chinese culture thrives within a diverse student body, as learners from various backgrounds came together to express shared traditions through meaningful and authentic experiences.
Another notable highlight was the unity dance, 「来嘛过新年」, during which students warmly invited their parents to join them on the dance floor. This shared moment of celebration emphasized the school’s strong belief in the importance of family–school partnership, underscoring how collaboration with families plays a vital role in supporting students’ learning, well-being, and holistic development.
Mrs. Luzviminda Sim, Vice President of the Southmont Campus, thanked all the participants and led an enthusiastic countdown to officially welcome the Year of the Horse. The festivities continued beyond the stage with interactive activities prepared by the school, including DIY Chinese arts and crafts where students and parents joyfully created together.
Non-CKSCian parents were also given a guided campus tour, offering an introduction to the school’s Montessori programme and the International Baccalaureate Primary Years and Middle Years Programmes. The tour provided valuable insight into the school’s learner-centered, inquiry-based approach to education.
The celebration concluded at the Food Hall, where guests were served a selection of traditional Chinese refreshments, including assorted dim sum, fortune cookies, and mini mandarin oranges—symbols of abundance, prosperity, and unity. The Chinese New Year Celebration at CKS College Southmont Campus was a dignified and memorable occasion, reflecting the school’s dedication to cultural heritage, educational excellence, and strong community partnership.
