On August 29, CKS College celebrated its Filipino Language and Culture Day or better known
as “Buwan ng Wika”, a vibrant event dedicated to honoring the country’s language, traditions,
and heritage. The celebration immersed students in the richness of Filipino identity through
stories, songs, games, and meaningful reflections.
On this special day, Montessori and International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (IB
PYP) students arrived in traditional Filipino attire, adding color and authenticity to the occasion.
Beyond simply wearing these clothes, students reflected on their cultural origins, gaining a
deeper appreciation of the history and meaning behind the traditions they represented. This
simple yet powerful activity fostered pride in their heritage while strengthening their cultural
understanding.
The event also showcased the richness of the Filipino language. Students sang Filipino songs,
listened to stories, and played traditional games that encouraged them to use and enjoy the
language in interactive ways. Both Montessori and IB PYP students also delighted the audience
with graceful performances of traditional Filipino folk dances such as Itik-Itik, Cariñosa, Sua Kua
Sua, and Balamban, showcasing regional steps passed down through generations. These
activities highlighted how language and culture serve as a bridge to the past while reinforcing a
shared sense of community.
Two of the most anticipated activities were the Pabitin game and the kite-making activity.
Montessori students eagerly jumped for prizes dangling from a bamboo lattice called a balag,
while IB PYP students crafted colorful kites—an enduring Filipino pastime known as
pagsalimbayan ng saranggola. Although rainy weather kept the children from flying their kites
outdoors, the school’s hallways came alive with excitement and vibrant displays of creativity.
Adding to the festive atmosphere, students enjoyed traditional sorbetes served in cones. This
sweet treat capped off the day with smiles and laughter, evoking fond memories of classic
Filipino street culture.
The Filipino Language and Culture Day not only celebrated tradition but also inspired students
to embrace and preserve their heritage. By connecting young learners to their roots, CKS
College-Southmont reaffirmed its commitment to nurturing pride in Filipino identity and passing
on these values to future generations.
